Illinois hunting and fishing

Taylor White, 13, killed her first buck Oct. 6 in northern Peoria County while hunting with her dad. This nice eight-point deer was dropped with a Mossberg 500 20 gauge slug. Taylor has shot does the past three years, but this was her first opportunity at an antlered deer.

Young deer hunters killed a record 3,114 deer during the Illinois youth deer hunt held Oct. 6 - 7.

Totals are preliminary, but this year’s tally is well above last year’s 1,853, and more than 700 deer ahead of the 2009 record total of 2,409.

“Young hunters were able to enjoy cool hunting conditions for the first time in several years, and this year’s total is a new record for the season,” said Paul Shelton, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Forest WIldlife Program Manger in an e-mail.

The previous five-year average from 2007 - 2011 was 1,549 deer.

Harvest sex ratios consisted of 49 percent does and 51 percent males (1,514 to 1,600).

The top five counties were Pike (166), Fulton (106), Adams (104), Jefferson (95), and Randolph (83).

Here are the county-by-county totals provided by DNR:
