Wounded eagle making good progress

November 16, 2011 at 02:23 PM

Rockford Register-Star

DURAND — A bald eagle’s recovery from a shotgun wound is right on track at Hoo Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center.

The 8-month-old eagle has begun to move its wings and could have surgically placed pins removed as soon as Monday or Tuesday.

“He has ferocious appetite, which is a good sign,” Director Karen Herdklotz said. “He moves around very well and exercises his wings as much as possible. We’re real pleased.”

The eagle was found shot Oct. 30 along the Illinois River. It was taken to Countryside Animal Clinic in Streator, where veterinarian Robert Harms performed a successful surgery.

The bird was transferred Nov. 3 to Hoo Haven.

Illinois Conservation Police are still searching for the shooter. Eagles are protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and violators can face up to a year in prison and fines of up to $100,000.

“We haven’t had many leads at this point, but we’re hoping someone will come forward with information,” said Stacey Solano, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call the state’s poacher hot line, 877-236-7529.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward in the case, and the Humane Society is offering $2,500 for information leading to an arrest.

Hoo Haven is a nonprofit supported solely by donations and volunteers. For more information about the animal rehabilitation center, call 815-629-2212.
