Wildlife Center still recovering from Sandy

January 14, 2013 at 07:23 AM

FRENCH CREEK, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Wildlife Center is still recovering from heavy damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.

But superintendent Gene Thorn says the damage won’t prevent the center from holding its annual Groundhog Day celebration.

Wet, heavy snow from the late October storm brought down numerous trees and branches at the French Creek center. Thorn tells the Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/VDMpNY ) that many of them fell on exhibits.

Most of the center’s birds of prey escaped but none of the animals were killed.

Thorn says the center’s special vinyl-coated chain-link fencing will have to be replaced. The center would be closed while repairs are made.
