Weather cancels day 2 of state bass finals; first day leader Morton declared the winner

June 01, 2013 at 03:57 PM

Peoria Journal Star

The second day of the Illinois High School Association state bass fishing tournament at Carlyle Lake was washed out Saturday, leaving Friday’s leader Morton as the state champion.

The team of Jordan Jensen and Justin Schick reeled in Morton’s second state championship in any sport with a limit of five fish totaling 13 pounds, four ounces Friday.

“There were storms and wind coming out of the east making it real difficult to do anything,” Morton coach Greg Prichard said.

“They kind of had a plan on what they wanted to do,” Prichard said. “They studied it and they know people around the lake, so they had an idea where to go with the water being so muddy.”

East Peoria finished fourth and Washington seventh.

It is the second bass fishing title in three years for the Mid-Illini Conference as Canton won in 2011.

Morton won a state baseball championship in 1984.

Second place when to Wheaton with 11 pounds, 10 ounces.

Third went to Niles Notre Dame with 10 pounds, 14 ounces.

Eighteen teams weighed a five-fish limit, while 13 teams weighed no fish at all.
