Upland game forecasts

Illinois hunting and fishing

Pheasants

In 2010-11, hunters killed 64,451 pheasants, a slight uptick over the previous year. The number of hunters was up, too, at 24,213 — an 8.9 percent increase. Figures were gleaned from mail surveys returned by hunters. Overall pheasant numbers are expected to be similar to last year.

Bobwhite

According to hunter survey data, 14,110 hunters killed 99,812 quail. The number of hunters was down 16.7 percent while the number of birds killed dropped 19.5 percent.

In 2000, about 45,000 hunters killed close to 300,000 quail.

Last year’s severe winter may have depressed numbers further. DNR urges hunters to go easy on quail in the later part of the season to protect the breeding population.
