2 ice fishermen die after falling into NY lake

WINDSOR, N.Y. (AP) — Two Binghamton men are dead after falling through thin ice while they were fishing on a Broome County lake.

WBNG reports (http://bit.ly/AjpWbP ) that emergency crews pulled the men from White Birch Lake in Windsor Saturday evening and took them to a hospital, but they later died.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder identified the men as 31-year-old Mike Katchuk and 55-year-old Stanley Wayman.

A local resident tried to throw a rope to the men as they struggled in the frigid water, but they were too far from shore. The sheriff says deputies responded within five minutes and one of the men was still above water, but he soon went under.

Harder says after a few warm days, the ice on White Birch Lake was only an inch thick.

Divers recover body from reservoir

GREEN VALLEY, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say the man who survived a fatal ice fishing accident on the Big Eau Pleine (oh PLAYN) Reservoir was driving the car that broke through the ice.

Divers searching under the ice on the Marathon County reservoir recovered the body of a 34-year-old Stratford man Sunday afternoon. The victim and a 30-year-old Stratford man were ice fishing when their car plunged through a thin layer of ice under a bridge west of Mosinee Saturday.

Sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Gray said Monday witnesses told investigators the surviving fisherman was driving the Pontiac that sank to the bottom of the reservoir. A Rib Mountain towing company used a specialized crane to recover the vehicle.

The Wausau Daily Herald (http://wdhne.ws/z1qglk) reports investigators say alcohol was likely involved in the accident.
