Illinois hunting and fishing

Alex Baldock of Edwards harvested her first turkey during Illinois’ North Zone third season. Alex’s Knox County bird weighed 18 pounds and had a 10-inch beard.

Turkey totals mixed so far

Illinois turkey hunters are proving to be an opportunistic group.

Despite an extremely wet spring and a seemingly endless stream of rainy days, hunters are still taking to the timber and harvesting gobblers.

Action has been much better in the South Zone, though, where the overall harvest through four seasons is 4,819 bearded birds, up from last year’s 4,698. Hunter harvest in the South Zone has surpassed last year’s totals in all seasons except the third.

Top five counties are: 1. Randolph 284, 2. Jefferson 259, 3. Pope 259, 4. Marion 249, 5. Wayne 227.

Here’s the harvest for other counties through April 30, 2009.

Things are not quite so rosy in the North Zone, where rain has clearly impacted hunters. Through three seasons, North Zone hunters have shot 5,716 wild turkeys compared to 6,178 through the same period last year. And third season was actually higher this year than last despite several windy days and scattered rains.

Top counties are: 1. JoDaviess 428, 2. Pike 353, 3. Adams 265, 4. Fulton 255, 5. Calhoun 218.

Here’s the harvest for other counties through April 30, 2009.

One problem that could plague turkey hunters in the final two seasons of North Zone action and in the final South Zone season is the fact that underbrush is growing rapidly. That will make seeing turkeys tougher and could move even more hunters out of the woods and into field edges.
