The perfect fish-cleaning board?

April 18, 2010 at 08:02 AM

CHILLICOTHE — While Paul Kelly doesn’t fish, that hasn’t stopped him from developing a product to make life easier for anglers.

After testing six prototypes, Kelly recently came up with what he claims is the best fish-cleaning board on the market. He calls his creation the Gator and is selling the boards out of a storefront in his hometown of Chillicothe.

“They’re virtually indestructible,” said Kelly, who traces his love for tinkering back to his great-great-great-great grandfather William Kelly. William Kelly is one of two men credited with the earliest patents for creating steel as we know it today.

What prompted the descendant of a steelmaker to build a better fish-cleaning board? Credit for that goes to Darlene Kumpf, vice president of the South Side Bank office in Chillicothe.

“She said, ‘You’re always coming up with something. Why don’t you come up with something to make it easier to clean a fish,’” Paul Kelly said.

So he did, completing his work last month. He focused on two major improvements compared to typical fish-cleaning boards.

First, unlike the clamps used on most boards, the Gator has a larger, more aggressive fish-gripping system. Second, because it is made of polyethylene plastic, not wood, Kelly said the Gator won’t smell and avoids the risk of cross-contaminating fish.

There’s also non-stick backing on the board to keep it from slipping while in use. All parts in the Gator’s clamping system are made of stainless steel.

One glance was all it took for Chillicothe outdoorsman Bill Fleming to sign on as a backer. “This is a lifetime buy,” said Fleming, who runs the Blarney Castle in Chillicothe. “For the Everyday Joe it’s a great tool.”

The Gator sells for $29.95 (plus shipping and handling) and is available at http://www.thegatorbykelpro.com or by calling 1-888-375-4175.

“We could have sent the plans to China and had them built for cheaper, but I wanted something that was entirely made in the U.S. That was important to me,” said Kelly, pictured below assembling a Gator. “Every part is made in the U.S.”

American made makes me want to buy one. Zambrano should have been sent to Des Moines instead of contaminating the bull pen.
