Tales from the Timber: Squirrel season

August 11, 2009 at 02:08 PM

Squirrel season isn’t the big affair it once was in Illinois.

But for a fair number of hunters, young and old alike, the start of squirrel season does still offer a nice reason to take to the timber.

And this year, what with cooler temperatures, heading to the woods has been much more enjoyable for many.

That includes Corey Kurete of Plainfield, pictured above with a pair of squirrels he shot on opening day.

“Last season I started taking Corey with me hunting. I just introduced him to the woods and started hunting small game (rabbits & squirrels) and he was hooked. Ever since the past season ended, he has wanted to get back into the woods. My kinda guy,” said his father, Joe Kurete. “Well Corey and I went squirrel hunting (opening morning) close to home and had some luck. This was our first time out this new season. We only had the first few hours in the morning available to hunt and made the best of it.”

Corey sounds like a natural based on the rest of his father’s report.

“We slipped through the woods quietly, but only saw two squirrels in the tops of trees cutting walnuts. He sniped them both with one shot each (both head shots). He had been practicing the week before and felt he was ready. He made a believer out of me.”

Nice work Corey.

Here’s a reminder that hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. The daily bag limit is five.

I am glad to see that you enjoy chasing bushy tails.  It is something that many people never experience but should because it sure is an excellent way to hone your hunting skills for big game later on.  I went this morning and did very well with my rifle.  As a boy, I was taught that it don’t count unless you get a head shot and this time of the year that can be a real challenge making the hunt even more fun!  Keep on hunting and chasing the bushy tail!
