Tales from the Timber: Bed-rest doe

June 16, 2009 at 02:02 PM

Bed rest did not slow Kim Knapp of Goodfield last hunting season.

Despite being 7 1/2 months pregnant and on a modified form of bed rest while carrying twins, she managed to shoot a big doe last shotgun season.

Due to her pregnancy, doctors would not allow Knapp to spend time in a tree stand, something she had done ever since marrying her husband Kevin eight years earlier. But the doctors didn’t say anything about hunting out of a living room.

So that’s where Knapp set up to hunt on Nov. 22. She picked the living room of her parents, Jerry and Becky Wyatt of Edwards. Fortunately, there are plenty of deer to choose from on the Wyatt’s Peoria County property—including the big doe pictured above.

But for the first day of the season Knapp saw nothing close. Then on Saturday, a doe finally came into range. “My dad had set up a decoy and when she came running into the yard it caught her eye and she stopped,” Knapp said.

At the time she shot the doe, Knapp was barefoot and wearing a t-shirt and jeans. “Nobody could believe I shot one,” she said laughing. “They were all outside freezing and I was inside warm and barefoot.”

Three weeks after shooting her doe, Knapp gave birth to twins: Kyler and Kelsey.

As her parents wrote, “She was barefoot and pregnant and shot a big doe. Wonder what her son, Kyler, and daughter, Kelsey, will think of this story when they get older?”

Congrats on a nice doe and Congrats on your new family members. I hope you did not shoot out a window or door from the house.
