Tales from the Timber: A good buddy

August 25, 2009 at 06:31 AM

Don Osborne of Mattoon says he is “probably the world’s worst deer hunter.”

Not so Osborne’s hunting buddy, Dan Cline, who is shown in a group of pictures Osborne scanned.

“We started hunting with BB-guns before grade school and (this year) went to our 40th high school reunion. The 50 odd years it took us to go from birds to squirrels and rabbits and then whitetail deer went by pretty fast,” writes Osborne. “Our usual hunt consists of the sound of gun fire coming from the direction of old Dan’s stand at first light of opening morning when he gets his deer and then the long cold wait (sometimes until the next year) for me to fill my tag.

“His nephew Little Danny and my youngest son Aaron have joined us in our hunting adventures. Aaron seems to have gotten his hunting skills from me. His first year out he shot an eight-pointer but the next year he shot a tree (pictured below). He didn’t seem to like the idea of the tree picture but I explained he would be able to laugh at the picture in later years. We have all shot a tree sometime or another.”

“I was just having fun explaining that deer are only about three feet tall. He is 30.  Deer hunting is about enjoying the hunt and the people you do it with. If you harvest a big one it is icing on the cake.”

On that point, Osborne (pictured below) is absolutely correct.
