Tales from the Timber: Exciting opener

October 06, 2009 at 12:35 PM

Paul Rients of Minonk started his bow season in strong fashion. Hunting last Sunday in LaSalle County, Rients shot a 9-point buck. And while the deer was not his biggest ever, it was still very memorable.

Here in his own words is an explanation of why.

“My nephew Levi has been looking forward to going bow hunting with me all summer. In fact he helped me hang the stand this deer was harvested from. We decided to sit in the “Buddy stand” (two-man ladder stand). It is near the edge of some thick cover and over looks a food plot which you can see to the left of us in the photo.

“We had several deer moving and feeding in the food plot including a close encounter with a fork horn. I told him to keep his eye out to the left since the thick cover is usually where the bucks move through. The sun was starting to disappear over the horizon when Levi alerted me to an approaching buck. We watched it make a few rubs and a scrape about 35 or 40 yards away.

“He then started circling in on us but disappeard behing a large oak tree and some brush. Levi and I decided to attempt to harvest him if he offered a clean shot. He worked his way to within 12 yards before I could good get a clear shot on him. The arrow hit with a thunderous SMACK! The buck bolted and expired in some CRP grass near the edge of the food plot.

“Thankfully my friend Mike Elias was hunting near by and had his camera on hand to take some great photos. This wasn’t the biggest buck I have ever shot but it made for one of the most fun and exciting hunts I have ever experienced since I was able to share it with my nephew. I think I have a future hunter on my hands for sure now.”
