Tales from the Timber: Youth

April 14, 2009 at 02:13 PM

Dennis Whitehurst left little to doubt when describing this year’s youth turkey hunt in the North Zone.

“It was the best youth turkey season in years for us,” he said. “It was a hard day of hunting but in the end it paid off.”

That seems obvious from the picture above of Drake Whitehurst (left) and Jake Howard of Yates City. Drake shot a 22-pound gobbler that had a 9-inch beard and one-inch spurs. Howard shot a 17-pounder. The boys also found a pair of deer sheds.

Drake’s big gobbler came in to a hen decoy at 11:30 a.m. in full strut. One shot was all it took for Drake to drop the bird, which had responded to Lynch box calls and an H.S. Strut diaphragm (the EZ Rasp).

Another Yates City youth hunter, Adam Mottaz, also shot a 22-pound gobbler with a 10-inch beard and 1.25-inch spurs.
