Stephenson County SWCD holding annual tree and fish sale

FREEPORT — The Stephenson County Soil and Water Conservation District’s annual tree sale, offering bare root trees, evergreen and shrub seedlings, is underway for 2012.

The sale is part of an effort to provide wildlife habitats and energy conservation, and plants must be used for those purposes and not as ornamentals or landscaping.

Orders must be placed by April 5. Trees are sold in bundles of five, 25 or 100, with prices ranging from $4 to $130. Tree pick-up is from 9 am to 5 p.m. April 19 at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds. Tree planters are available for rental if the purchaser has large acreage to plant.

Evergreens available include fraser fir, red pine, white pine, colorado blue spruce, Norway spruce, white spruce and American arborvitae. Deciduous trees include black cherry, black walnut, bur oak, pin oak and red maple. Shrubs are hazelnut, red osier dogwood, silky dogwood and American plum.

Also for sale are marking flags, planting gel, Plantskydd animal repellent, tree mats, tree tubes, bat houses and bird houses.

The spring fish sale has also started start, with channel catfish, largemouth bass, hybrid sunfish, redear sunfish, bluegill, black crappies, fat head minnow and grass carp available for purchase to stock new and existing ponds. Grass carp orders must be made by March 12, and all other species by March 21. Pick-up will be at 11 a.m. March 28 at the USDA/SWCD parking lot.
