Updated: second fisherman’s body found

April 06, 2011 at 07:51 AM

The State Journal-Register

Underwater searchers Tuesday afternoon found the second victim of a Lake Springfield boating accident that occurred in windy conditions Sunday.

The body of Christopher Molash, 25, of Riverton was located about 3:20 p.m. in water about 15 feet deep, 200 yards northwest of Marine Island, according to authorities.

Molash and a fishing buddy, Travis Christopher, 26, of Riverton, were in a 14-foot motorboat that capsized. Christopher’s body was pulled from the water about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Molash was found about 590 feet north of the spot where Christopher’s body was recovered, said Capt. Joe Morelock of the Illinois Conservation Police.

The two men were last seen in the boat by a lake-area homeowner about noon Sunday near Maple Grove Lane and Marine Island. No one saw the boat capsize, but the craft was found floating upside-down at the shore near Virginia Lane at 9:37 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities have said the boat would have been difficult to control in wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph that were producing waves up to 4 to 5 feet tall. The water was also about 50 degrees, which would cause hypothermia to set in within minutes.

The two men were part of a new fishing club that was holding an unofficial fishing tournament on the lake Sunday.

Police said they weren’t wearing personal floatation devices, but both knew how to swim, and there was no evidence that alcohol was involved.

John Reynolds can be reached at 788-1524.
