ROCKFORD — A Rockford business hosted a firearms training class Saturday to help its employees, friends and family members prepare for pending concealed carry legislation.

More than 20 people gathered at Stateline Rental Properties, 920 22nd St., to take a course on Utah’s concealed carry laws from certified instructor John Royster of Rockford. Utah’s permit is accepted in more than 30 states across the nation.

Illinois remains the only state that doesn’t allow for the concealed carry of firearms, but that is expected to change this year. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in December that Illinois can no longer ban residents from carrying concealed firearms. The court gave state lawmakers 180 days to legalize concealed carry.

“We trying to get ready so that when Illinois gets concealed carry that we may have reciprocity or some kind of reciprocal rights that might help us get the Illinois carry if they take this class first,” said Rick Davis, owner of Stateline Rental.

The class covered basic marksmanship, safety and laws about both concealed carry and the use of force.

“If you pull the trigger in the wrong instance, it could ruin your life,” said Davis, a Republican who ran for Winnebago County Board in November.

Davis said concealed carry will be a meaningful tool for his employees to defend themselves. He said employees can at times run into dangerous situations with vagrants or squatters. He said he hopes it can be a deterrent to crime and that he never has to use his weapon.
