Public lands open during late-winter deer hunt

Several Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites will be open for hunting during the Late-Winter Deer Season in Illinois. The 2009-2010 season dates are Dec. 31-Jan. 3 and Jan. 15-17. Only antlerless deer (doe or buck with antlers less than three inches) may be taken during this season. 

The following sites are only open to hunters with a Site-Specific Late-Winter Deer Permit.  Permits for these sites are limited and will be available over-the-counter through DNR Direct license and permit agents beginning Dec. 15.  Unfilled 2009 site-specific firearm or muzzleloader permits for these sites are NOT valid during the Late Winter Deer season:
• Jo Daviess -Apple River Canyon SP – Thompson/Salem Units
• Ogle - Castle Rock SP
• Grundy - Goose Lake Prairie/Heidecke
• Joe Daviess - Hanover Bluff SNA
• Peoria- Jubilee College SP
• Ogle- Lowden Miller SF
• Joe Daviess- Rall Woods (formerly Falling Down Prairie)
• Saline- Sahara Woods SFWA
• Wayne- Sam Dale Lake SFWA
• Brown- Siloam Springs/Buckhorn Unit
• Adams, Brown- Siloam Springs
• LaSalle- Starved Rock/Matthiessen SP/Mitchells Grove/Sandy Ford
• Joe Daviess- Tapley Woods SNA
• Joe Daviess-Wards Grove SNA
• Ogle- White Pines SP

The following sites are open to hunters with Late-Winter Deer permits issued for the county in which the site is located.  Permits for the counties open for the Late-Winter season will be available over-the-counter through DNR Direct license and permit agents beginning Dec. 15.  As in years past, unfilled firearm, muzzleloader, and youth firearm permits for the county in which the site is located will be valid for this season at the site.  Unfilled site-specific firearm or muzzleloader deer permits are also valid for the sites listed below.  Where site boundaries extend over more than one county, only the portion of the site that lies within an open county is open to hunting.

• Brown – Weinberg-King SP – Spunky Bottoms
• Bureau – Miller Anderson Woods (Bureau Co. portion only)
• Calhoun – Mississippi River Pool 25 and 26
• Clinton – Carlyle Lake – East Fork Unit, Eldon Hazlet SP (North side of Allen Branch)
• Crawford – Crawford County SWA
• Effingham – Wildcat Hollow SHA
• Fayette – Carlyle Lake SFWA
• Hamilton – Hamilton County SFWA
• Hamilton and Jefferson – Ten Mile Creek SFWA
• Henderson – Big River SF
• Jefferson – Rend Lake SFWA and Rend Lake C.O.E. property
• Jersey – Copperhead Hollow SFWA, Pere Marquette (Open Area)
• Jersey – Mississippi River SFWA (Pools 25 and 26 in Jersey Co.)
• Johnson – Deer Pond SNA, Ferne Clyffe SP, Skinner Farm, Cache River (Johnson Co. portion only)
• Johnson and Union – Cypress Creek NWR, Cypress Pond SNA
• Knox – Spoon River SF
• LaSalle - Marseilles SFWA - (Open only on Dec. 31, Jan. 2-3;  Hunting hours close early at 12:00 noon on Jan 2-3; must sign in at the site check station by 5 a.m. to get in the daily draw; standby hunting available after the draw as space allows)
• Lawrence – Chauncey Marsh
• Marshall and Peoria – Marshall SFWA
• McDonough – Argyle Lake SP
• Perry – Pyramid SP (Captain, Denmark and “Old Park” units only)
• Pike – Mississippi River Pools 22 and 24, Ray Norbut SFWA

• Randolph –Turkey Bluffs SFWA, Fort de Chartres SHS
• Randolph, St. Clair, Monroe – Kaskaskia River SFWA

• Schuyler – Weinberg-King SP, Weinberg-King SP/Scripps Unit
• Tazewell – Mackinaw River SFWA
• Union – Trail of Tears SF, Devil’s Island SFWA (Union Co. portion only), Giant City SP (Union Co. portion only)
