PSO welcomes Josh Adkins

June 04, 2010 at 06:47 AM

In our never-ending quest to provide Illinois outdoors enthusiast with more information, we’ve added yet another blogger to Prairie State Outdoors.

The latest addition is Josh Adkins of Greenville, who blogs under the title Southwest Outdoorsman and has been supplying us with a fantastic fishing report from Carlyle Lake. Actually, Adkins started supplying the report after complaining about what we were providing. But unlike many complainers, he offered something better. Much better.

A diehard angler, Adkins does most of his fishing in the spillway below Carlyle Lake, in the Kaskaskia River north and south of Carlyle, at Lake Shelbyville, at Governor Bond Lake, below Lock and Dam 19 on the Mississippi River and at Coffeen Lake.

“I do 75 percent of my fishing from shore which is unique and could provide some insight to a usually left out demographic of bank anglers that don’t have a boat but still want to catch fish,” he said.

We agree. PSO is built largely on contributions by readers like Adkins who are passionate about the outdoors.

We also like the fact that Adkins is a hard-core bowhunter who spends most of his fall in the woods when he’s not working in the criminal justice field. Adkins has family ties to Hancock County where he spends time bowhunting.

He has also fished in the Chicago area on the Fox River, at Shabbona Lake and on the Lake Michigan lakefront.

But the focus of his blog will be southwest Illinois, hence the name of his blog. Look for more stories on bank fishing but also tales of deer hunting, varmint hunting, bowfishing, mushroom hunting, turkey hunting, bird hunting and much more. As Adkins said, “I am a jack of all trades in fishing and hunting but a master of none, which is both a strength and a weakness.”

At the very least it should make for good reading. Actually, it already has. Adkins has posted several entries and managed to catch a nice flathead since he started blogging.

If that fish is a sign of things to come, Josh should enjoy a good run here on PSO.

As a side note, we are still searching for a waterfowl blogger to help us better cover duck and goose hunting this fall. Anyone who is interested should send an e-mail to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thanks and check back often to see what Josh has caught or shot lately. Here’s a sampling of a few snapshots from his personal photo album.

Welcome Josh!  You’ve been doing a great job with the fishing reports and outside of Gov Bond lake - I hit a lot of the same waters.  You’re welcome in my boat anytime you wanna go bud.

“jack of all trades and master of none”  - that’s probably about 90% of us hook and bullet types…

Looking forward to those blogs and continued reports….

thanks for the support standingcorn!  thats the beauty of fishing and hunting, everyone has diffrent tactics/methods and you can always learn something new with the people you hunt and fish with and adapt them to your style. There are always plenty of fish to be had from shore as well! most lakes in this area have plenty of shore access for bank angles, i wish i could say the same about public access for bow/gun hunters!
