Prairie primer video series: Revis Hill Prairie

June 28, 2013 at 08:12 AM

The State Journal-Register

Revis Hill Prairie

Revis Hill Prairie in Mason County is featured in the second in a new series on videos introducing the Illinois tallgrass prairie.

The first video focused on early summer wildflowers at the Centennial Park Prairie in Springfield.

The new entry takes viewers high into the bluffs above the Sangamon River to visit Revis Hill Prairie State Nature Preserve.

Illinois once was covered more than 60 percent by prairie. Some central Illinois counties were almost entirely prairie.

Since the arrival of settlers from Europe, most of the prairie has been converted to agriculture.

There are some wonderful examples of original prairie remnants – and also successful prairie reconstructions – that provide a glimpse into the state’s prairie past.

Watch for new videos in the series from time to time this summer. Then make it a point to visit these special places.

Other outdoors video libraries, including the backyard birding series, are still available.
