Conservation Police will be “out in full force” watching for poachers during the firearm deer season that begins Friday.

Two high-profile poaching cases in northern Illinois involving trophy deer have heightened awareness of the issue.

In both instances, trophy animals valued at between $25,000 and $35,000 were taken illegally.

Illinois’ first segment of the traditional firearm deer season runs Friday through Sunday.

The second segment will be held Dec. 1 - 4.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police will be watching from the air and the ground as airplane details will be employed to supplement the usual safety and license checks.

So far, more than 327,000 permits have been issued to firearm deer hunters.

Hunters in Illinois killed 98,944 deer during last year’s firearm season, about half of the 182,270 deer taken in all seasons in 2010.

how many DOC officers does the state of IL have? I think a stiffer fine for trespassing would prevent poachers and trespassers and take less effort from the DOC. Poaching is becoming a huge problem in illinois as it increases in fame for its deer hunting. We NEED to have stricter laws and fines to help enforce it.

agree 100% ......... and we need to educate the masses to know that you DO NOT have a right to trespass just because the deer you wounded ran onto someone elses land.

What - are all 3 CPO’s that the state has left by now after all the cutting - all 3 are going to be out?  That should have the poachers shaking in their boots . . .
