DU donates land for refuge
Ducks Unlimited donated 318 acres to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for inclusion into the recently established Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR).

The site, located in Randolph County, is located along the Mississippi River.

DU acquired the site with a grant from the North American Wetlands Conservation Council.

The bottomland area totaling more than 145 acres has been converted from cropland to hardwood tree planting.

The rest of the property has been allowed to revert to wetlands.

DU and the American Land Conservancy have acquired 2,000 acres in the Rockwood Island and Crain’s Island areas with intent to transfer the property to the Fish and Wildlife Service for inclusion in the refuge.

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation also provided funds for land acquisition.

Conservation Police Officers make Memorial Day arrests
Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police officers arrested 12 boaters and eight motorists for operating boats and driving vehicles while under the influence as part of law enforcement efforts during the Memorial Day weekend.

CPOs made 606 arrests for other offenses and issued 974 warnings at state-managed sites from May 27-31.

Six boating accidents were investigated, but there were no fatalities.

CPOs also performed more than 1,200 routine boat safety inspections.

Violations ending in arrests ranged from possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, underage drinking and disorderly conduct to illegal fishing and boat safety and boating law violations.
