DNR plants alligator gar

Wildlife officials want the alligator gar to make a comeback in Illinois. Forty-three gar, which can grow as large as 300 pounds and 10 feet long, were stocked in the Hennepin and Hopper lakes near Hennepin last fall. The state once had an alligator gar population but lost it as habitat was destroyed.

State DNR fisheries biologist Wayne Herndon said he hadn’t seen an alligator gar in Illinois since the 1960s on the Big Muddy River.

It’s officially a Wis. bow record

A 12-point buck killed in November has been certified as the Wisconsin archery record.
The deer, killed by Brian Inda of Wautoma, recently was scored at 187 5/8 inches, which was three-eighths of an inch better than the former best.

‘World slam’ of turkey trapping

A Michigan DNR wildlife biologist recently became the first person to officially complete the “world slam” of wild turkey trapping.

Al Stewart trapped all five subspecies of the North American wild turkey: Eastern, Gould’s, Osceola, Merriam’s, Rio Grande and Ocellated. The record is recognized by the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Minn. has first CWD case

Minnesota has recorded its first chronic wasting disease case in its wild deer herd. A test showed a hunter-harvested deer killed in November in southeastern Minnesota had the fatal disease.
CWD was first found in Minnesota at a game farm in 2002.

Great plates

In response to my request for interesting outdoors-related license plates, Bill Wright of Rockford spotted this one an Illinois vehicle: LUTFSK 2. He suspected it referred to the traditional fish dish of Nordic countries.

If you see or have an interesting outdoors-related license plate, contact me at the e-mail address or phone number below.
