Nugent takes responsibility for deer-baiting

August 18, 2010 at 03:41 PM

MARYSVILLE, Calif. (AP) - Classic rocker Ted Nugent says he should have been better informed about California game laws after pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges of deer-baiting.

Nugent said in a statement posted to his website Wednesday that he takes full responsibility for the hunting incident televised on a February episode of his Outdoor Channel hunting show.

California game wardens watching the show saw Nugent kill an immature buck during the hunt in Northern California. Investigators found that the deer had been eating bait before being killed.

Baiting wildlife is illegal in California.

Nugent pleaded no contest last week to baiting the deer and not having a properly signed hunting tag. A Yuba County Superior Court judge ordered Nugent to pay a $1,750 fine.

I have seen television shows using that c’meer deer here in Illinois. Can’t remember which one, I quit watching that crap a while back. It is illegal to use it here too right?

Yes, its illegal here in Illinois to bait deer period. I believe it used to be ok to put out a block or rock as a mineral suppliment and for trail cameras but that changed with the oncomming of CWD. The rule book does somewhat contradict itself though. It states in one section that its illegal to bait deer period, seeming to me that they mean any time and all the time. The next thing you read about it says that bait needs to be removed so many days before hunting the area….what? Confusing. Thats what last years rule book stated, have not read this years in terms of baiting yet.
I know that the game wardens around here will give a ticket for anytype of bait or block or rock anymore. Can’t even put apples in front of your stand…..TICKET!
Manage your timber properly for the hardwood acorns and plant a few apple trees in strategic locations and thats all you really need. Timber management is very important! Contact me if you would like any Forestry and wildlife managment help or info.
