Millikin holding unique fishing auction

December 31, 2009 at 05:57 PM

DECATUR — An unique alliance is developing between outdoor sportsmen and a collegiate women’s basketball program to help in the fight against breast cancer.

Lori Kerans, the long time women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division III Millikin University in Decatur, is a two-time breast cancer survivor.  Kerans and her players have taken on the challenge to do all they can to aid in the eradication of breast cancer.  For the last several years, Millikin in cooperation with the WBCA (Women’s Basketball Coaches Association) has hosted a WBCA PinkZone event to help raise funds for this fight.

As part of that effort Kerans enlisted the help of her father, Bob Kerans, who serves as a volunteer coach for the Millikin program.  Bob is recognized in Illinois as the founder of the Illinois Muskie Tournament Trail and has been fishing and taking part in outdoor pursuits for almost seventy years.  Wanting to do more in the battle against breast cancer, Bob Kerans came to the conclusion that teaming fisherman with the women’s basketball team’s efforts would be a perfect way to help in the fight.

For last season’s PinkZone event’s silent auction, Bob convinced members of the fishing community to donate “pink lures” and “pink fishing items” to be auctioned off during the event.

The acceptance of the idea has been exciting and continues to grow.  Ducktail Lures, Bass Pro Shop, Kegara Fishing Lures, Colby Simms Tackle and Grim Reaper Lures were some of the first to send their contributions (pink lures).  As word continues to spread about this effort interest in joining the fight against breast cancer continues to grow.

As part of Millikin’s 2010 event, five quality guided fishing trips will be auctioned off.  Bob Mehsikomer of “Simply Fishing” fame has donated a two-day trip fishing with him during the Shawnee Muskie Hunters fall 2010 tournament, bringing his Simply Fishing television filming boat with him as well.  Tab Walker, owner of the Outdoor Sportsman’s Lodge on one of Illinois truly trophy largemouth bass lakes, has donated a one day guided trip for two on this lake.  Bob Taylor, an Illinois State Muskie Championship winner, has donated a one day guided trip for two on one of Illinois top muskie lakes – Evergreen Lake near Bloomington/Normal.  Walt Krause, author of “Muskie Fishing, I Did Not Know That” and a Muskie guide on Kinkaid Lake near Murphysboro, has donated a one-day fishing trip for two on this lake.  The final guided trip is a Walt Watts Pontoon Trip for Four on Lake Shelbyville.

Millikin’s PinkZone auction will also include four beautiful pieces of art featuring outdoor scenes.

Bidding for the fishing trips and outdoor artwork will take place as part of an online auction. Click here for more information on the 2010 PinkZone event and the special auction go to:

Bidding in the auction will take place Jan. 17-27.

Millikin’s 2010 WBCA PinkZone event will take place Saturday, January 30 during a Millikin University and North Park basketball game starting at 2 p.m. The day’s activities will also include the men’s varsity teams playing immediately following the women’s game at approximately 4:30 p.m.
