Michigan reports over 10,000 deer dead due to EHD

Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources biologists say 10,430 deer have been reported dead likely due to epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD).

Totals are current through Oct. 16.

In a press release, Brent Rudolph, wildlife research specialist and deer and elk program leader, said the number of deer reported is a minimum number “since not all deer that die are reported.”

He extended his thanks to hunters and volunteers working to provide information to MDNR.

“This is a horrible disease for hunters, the public in general, and DNR personnel to see impacting the deer,” he said. “But, while nobody is pleased to be dealing with this, we’ll get through it, these local deer populations will rebound, and we can at least be thankful this is not a disease with human health concerns or permanent impacts on the health of our deer.”

Reports have been coming in from south and central Michigan counties.

“Deer have died in substantial numbers in at least 29 counties this summer and fall,”

said Doug Reeves, asst. chief of the MDNR wildlife division.

The MDNR will continue taking reports from the public until Jan. 1.

“Once we have positive laboratory confirmation of the presence of EHD in an area (generally a county), we do not collect or test additional animals from that same area,” he said. “That does not mean that we are no longer interested in additional reports of dead deer in those areas.

“We want any and all reports, whether the deer seem relatively fresh or they have been dead for a while.”

Many Midwest states are experiencing EHD outbreaks.

As of Oct. 4, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources had received reports of 2,043 deer deaths from 76 counties likely caused by EHD.

The last severe outbreak was in 2007, when DNR received reports of 1,966 deer dead in 54 counties.
