Macomb Outdoor Expo ahead

Outdoor living is the focus of the first Macomb Outdoor Expo this Saturday and Sunday at Western Hall on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb.

Vendors at the show will have booths on hunting, fishing, gardening and other outdoors-living related activities.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9-4 on Sunday. Admission fee is $2 per adult, children 13 and under are free.

Scheduled speakers are Tim Wells, Steve Welch, Jim Crowley, and Dan Vinovich. Wells is an expert archery shot, in addition to hosting the television show “Relentless Pursuit,”  writing books, and being featured in national magazines.  Welch is a Lake Shelbyville Fishing Guide, a Crappie U.S.A. Touring Pro, and writes for Adventure Sports Outdoors and Heartland Outdoors.  Crowley, an expert fisherman, is an interim host of Midwest Outdoors, reports on his many fishing trips in Canada, and teaches back-to-basics fishing courses.  Vinovich is an avid outdoorsman who has made hunting and fishing in Central Illinois a major part of his life. 

In addition to the expert speakers, there will be a wide variety of vendor booths and sign-ups for prizes such as a two-night stay at the Heartland Lodge in Nebo, IL, and a two-night Deluxe Cabin stay at Mark Twain Landing, Mark Twain Lake with a family water pass package.  In addition, Bernard Swank of Mystik Long Bows will be onsite demonstrating the making of a long bow.

Buckmasters measurers scoring deer
Any buck or rack harvested from any season, archery or gun will qualify to win the Lucky Buck Contest.  The winner of the Lucky Buck Contest will win a guided hunt with Tim Wells of Relentless Pursuit.  To qualify for the Lucky Buck Contest bring your buck or rack to the Outdoor Expo on Saturday or Sunday, March 21st or 22nd,  and leave it on display until 3pm on Sunday to qualify to win; all bucks or racks displayed are qualified to win.  A Big Buck Plaque will also be awarded to the largest gun and archery buck harvested during the 2008 season. The bucks or racks will need to be scored by the Buckmaster Team to be in the running for the title of 2009 Outdoor Expo Big Buck.  Plaques provided by Gumbarts and Engraving by Lin.

Pop-up archery shoot
There will also be a pop-up archery shoot Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Everly Park, located at the corner of US 67 and University Dr.. The cost is $10 for a 20 arrow round.  Cash prizes will be awarded. To pre-register, you can contact the WIU Archery Club at 217-370-0071 or Prestige Communications at 309-833-2121.

Duck and turkey calling contests
Thre are Open and Novice Turkey and Duck calling contests. The Duck Calling contest starts at 11:30 and the Turkey Calling contest starts at 2:30p.m. on Saturday March 21st. To pre-register call 309-833-2121. Registration on Saturday for the Duck Calling Contest will be from 9am – 11am and Turkey Calling from 9am – 2pm.  Novice Division will be awarded a trophy for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and open division will be awarded a prize and trophy for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers..
