Letter writer urges new perspective on “sharpshooters”

February 15, 2012 at 09:40 AM

Rockford Register-Star

This letter to the editor is in response to an editorial published in the Rockford Register-Star about the use of sharpshooters to control deer numbers and test for chronic wasting disease. The link to the editor is below the letter.

Sometimes when we aren’t on the same page, I wonder whether maybe I need another perspective. Your Sunday editorial caused me such cognitive dissonance that I hope you too could contemplate another perspective.

First of all I hope you realize that the title sharpshooters is given to them by the Department of Natural Resources for PR reasons. It sounds much more politically correct to have deer populations “controlled” by sharpshooters than to be harvested by hunters.

Secondly, for a state that is in as horrible fiscal shape as Illinois is, why do you think it’s better for our taxpayers to pay the salaries of these sharpshooters, than it would be to use this opportunity for generating revenue for our state? I believe this could be easily be done by charging hunters for this opportunity.

Third and most confusing: These “sharpshooters” dump piles of corn on the ground, and put out hay for bait to shoot deer over. This encourages deer to feed on the same bait piles. Most game biologists would tell you that this only encourages the spread of the very disease they are trying to control. Please consider another perspective.

"There are too many deer in the Winnebago County forest preserves to ensure a healthy population. We think the Forest Preserve board of commissioners should allow Illinois Department of Natural Resources sharpshooters into the preserves to check deer for chronic wasting disease."
