Let me coach a bass team

October 19, 2007 at 09:59 PM

The Illinois High School Association’s consideration of making bass fishing an interscholastic sport has captured the attention of Southern Illinoisan columnist Les Winkeler.

But Winkeler has somewhat mixed emotions about the subject. On the one hand, he wants to be a coach, writing:

“It’s not that I’m that altruistic. I’m just assuming the schools will have to furnish boats and vehicles for their fishing team. Hey, if the price for a new boat and vehicle is taking a high school kid fishing regularly, I’m on board.”

But he also raises some questions. Namely, is participation limited to kids who already have access to boats?

les,
I have never read any of your articles before, but I came across this one and had to think wow what an idiot. How did he become an outdoors writer. You obviously know absolutely nothing about fishing. You do not need a boat with a big motor (or even a boat at all), you definitely dont need a new vehicle, and you dont need expensive tackle to catch fish. Encouraging youngsters to participate in outdoor activities such as fishing and trap-shooting is ALWAYS a good idea!!
