Lake Shelbyville announces waterfowl hunting rules

October 28, 2013 at 09:44 AM

Prairie State Outdoors

Okaw Wetlands at Lake Shelbyville will be available on a first-come, first-served basis during the 2013 - 2014 waterfowl season.

Hunters can enter the wetlands after 12 a.m. the day they plan to hunt.

The hunting dates for waterfowl season are:

Ducks - Oct. 26 to Dec. 24

Canada Geese - Oct. 26 to Nov. 17 and Nov. 26 to Jan 31

Snow Geese - Oct. 26 to Jan. 31

White Fronted Geese - Nov. 19 to Jan. 31

Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to 1 p.m. Central Standard Time.

Blinds must be vacated and hunters out of the area no later than 2 p.m.

Hunters may note the hunting conditions will differ this year due to the levees being overtopped; water went over the levee and covered the land.

Due to the land being covered in water or too wet, crops were not planted.

However, moist soil plants are present and water has been pumped in to cover them.

Hunting will be allowed from the existing blinds. All have been cleaned and brushed.

Blind 3 is designed for hunters with disabilities and Blind 10 is a group blind capable of holding four hunters.

Odd numbered blinds can only be used for hunting on Saturday and Sunday and even number blinds can only be used for hunting on Tuesday and Thursday.

No hunting is allowed on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

For more information call (217) 774-3951 ext. 7049.
