A fishing tournament for children 12 years of age and under will be held June 8 in the Opossum Creek Recreation Area at Lake Shelbyville.

The tournament will be held at the pond near the entrance to the park.

There is no cost, but participants are encouraged to pre-register, although it is not mandatory.

Kids age six and under must check in at 8:30 a.m. and will fish from 9 - 10 a.m.

Kids age seven-12 must check-in at 9:30 a.m. and will fish from 10 – 11 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. A certificate of participation will be awarded to all young anglers.

The tournament will be limited to bank fishing only.

All participants will be required to bring and wear a life jacket.

Each angler must have his or her own fishing equipment (including tackle and bait).

An adult must accompany all children.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn how to clean fish and enjoy a free fish fry for lunch.

Volunteers are still needed to teach proper fish cleaning techniques to record tournament information.

For more information, to pre-register, or to volunteer call the Lake Shelbyville Interpretive Services and Outreach Department at (217) 774-3951 ext. 2.
