Kentucky teen missing during hunting trip found dead

November 20, 2012 at 08:40 PM

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (AP) — The body of a 15-year-old northeastern Kentucky boy who disappeared during a weekend hunting trip was found Tuesday in a quarry, where he had fallen from a cliff, police said.

No foul play was suspected in the death of Ricky Dean Hamilton Jr. An autopsy was being performed in Frankfort to determine the cause of death.

Hamilton left home Saturday afternoon with his father to hunt nearby, police said. Officials said earlier that the two were hunting deer. They split up and were to meet later at a specific area, but the teenager never arrived.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Endre Samu said a unit searching by aircraft spotted the body around 1 p.m. EST Tuesday at Lehigh Hanson Rock Quarry, a few miles south of Flemingsburg.

About 100 people participated every day in the search for the Fleming County High School football player. The searchers included community members, emergency management officials, and volunteers from Fleming County fire departments and police, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

“It’s been a great turnout, but unfortunately we did not get the result we wanted,” said Grover Money, assistant chief of the Ewing Fire Department. “We feel for the family and wish we’d had better results.”

Funeral arrangements were pending.
