Is your county open for the late-winter season? Check the map

November 14, 2012 at 09:26 AM

Prairie State Outdoors

A friend called yesterday trying to find out if a county previously open for the late-winter firearm deer season would be open this year.

“I heard Union County was going to be closed. Is that true?”

The short answer is, yes.

Ten counties previously open for late-winter seasons have been closed because deer population targets have been met in those counties.

Those include: Cass, Christian, Henry, Johnson, Lawrence, Mason, Morgan, Tazewell, Union and Wabash.

Hunters are advised to be sure their county is open for late-winter season because some hunters try to fill unused antlerless tags during the late-winter season.

According to the Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations, “Illinois resident hunters must have a current, valid Late-Winter Deer Season Permit ($17.50), or an unfilled firearm, youth or muzzleloader deer permit valid for the previous firearm, youth or muzzleloader deer season and valid for one of the open counties.”

Complete rules are on page 18.

The map below shows which counties are open for late-winter deer hunting.

Here are some additional dates, facts and figures about Illinois deer hunting:

Remaining Illinois deer hunting season dates:

Nov. 16 - 18 and Nov. 29 - Dec. 2: Traditional firearm deer season

Dec. 7 – 9: Muzzleloader deer season (muzzleloaders also allowed Nov. 29 – Dec. 2)

Dec. 27 - 30 and Jan. 18 – 20: Late-winter and CWD seasons in select counties.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, 334,406 firearm deer-hunting permits have been issued as of Nov. 14.

About half of the state’s annual deer harvest occurs over the two weekends firearm deer hunting, a testament to the season’s popularity.

Illinois hunters killed 181,411 deer during all 2011 – 2012 seasons.

Firearm hunters accounted for 97,888 deer.

Archery hunters killed 61,852. So far this season, archery hunters already have killed more than 41,000 deer.

Youth hunters, muzzleloaders and late-winter and chronic wasting disease seasons accounted for the rest of the state’s harvest.
