Iowa panel backs increased hunting fee

March 05, 2009 at 01:03 PM

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa lawmakers are pushing ahead with plans to charge out-of-state visitors more to hunt and fish in the state.

Some outdoor groups had signaled a willingness to see fees increased if the money would help habitat or pay for trails. But lawmakers focused on out-of-state visitors because Gov. Chet Culver opposed raising fees for Iowa residents.

Among the changes would be raising the license fee for out-of-state deer hunters from $150 to $300.

Des Moines Sen. Dick Dearden says he expects the Senate Natural Resources Committee to approve the fee increase Thursday. The higher fees would raise up to $2 million annually.

Well….I have hunted in Iowa for a long time.  I have many friends there and have enjoyed hunting there but this is too much.  I can hunt elk for less than one of their nusance deer.

Good bye Iowa!  Hopefully others will follw my lead.

I had planned on applying for Iowa this year but not anymore. Iowa can keep their deer and I will keep my money and spend it elsewhere. Plenty of other options besides Iowa.
