Iowa officials investigate hunter’s injury

December 06, 2012 at 07:33 PM

The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials say they’re investigating why a muzzleloader exploded while being used by a hunter in central Iowa.

The state Department of Natural Resources say Theodore Larsen’s thumb was severed by the blast Wednesday afternoon near Truro. His thumb has not been found.

The Cumming man was hunting from an elevated stand when the muzzleloader exploded in his hands as he fired at a deer.

Larsen was airlifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Well, What happened?  How’s the fellow doing?  Plugged muzzle?  Too much powder?  Faulty rifle?  Make/model?  Lots of folk shoot ML’s.  How’s about an update?

No update-this site sucks, so I looked into it myself.  Man double loaded his ML.  Barrel burst.  He’s lucky to be alive.  Deleting this site on my favorites.

“Larsen said he forgot to look inside the barrel of his gun. Had he checked, he would have noticed that the gun was already loaded with a bullet and smokeless powder. Instead he loaded a second shot into the gun that then exploded when it was fired.”
