Illinois authors recognized for Shawnee National Forest guidebook

Larry and Donna Mahan’s book, “20 Day Trips in and around the Shawnee National Forest,” has been named the best travel guide of the year by the American Library Association.
A review on the Association’s Website that “the Mahans take you everywhere you need to go to gain an intense appreciation of southern Illinois as a vacation spot,” and calls the book “an enthusiastic guide to an overlooked place.”

The Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois is too big to be explored just one trip. In fact, it can be downright difficult to decide what part of the 279,000-acre national forest to visit when time is limited to a three-day-weekend at most.
