IHSA setting bass sectionals

Also, Varsityfishing.com is offering to build free Web sites for high school teams. So far, Glenbard North and Illini Bluffs have built pages.

Selecting and receiving permission to fish 18 lakes as sectionals for this year’s first state bass fishing tournament has been no easy task for the Illinois High School Association.

But Dave Gannaway, the IHSA administrator in charge of the fishing tournament, hopes to have the April 24 sectional lineup set by February. Presently the plan is to have no more than 26 boats per sectional site.

Gannaway is also looking to avoid river fishing for this year’s sectionals.

“That just makes for better fishing,” Gannaway said. “But it’s a little tougher than people think to get 18 lakes open on the same day in April.”

Here’s a rundown on possible sectional sites, though nothing is yet set in stone.

Northern Illinois

Very likely: Heidecke Lake, Shabbona Lake, Tampier Lake, Skokie Lagoons, Busse Lake, Chain O’ Lakes (north and south sectionals)
Possible: LaSalle Lake (concern over winds halting fishing), Pierce Lake, Lake George
Comments: “The Cook County Forest Preserve has been awesome,” Gannaway said. “They stepped up and gave us permission to use three of their lakes.”

North-central Illinois

Very likely: Clinton Lake, Banner Marsh
Possible: Powerton Lake, Evergreen Lake, Dawson Lake
Comments: Powerton Lake is a problem in that weigh-ins have not been allowed at the site in the past. This would seem to be an exception worth making, though winds could be a factor there, also. Evergreen is tough bass fishing for most.

South-central Illinois

Very likely: Coffeen Lake, Lake Shelbyville, Sangchris Lake, Lake Jacksonville, Forbes Lake
Possible: Lake Springfield, Newton Lake
Comments: Lots of good bass fishing lakes in this region.

Southern Illinois

Very likely: Lake of Egypt, Kinkaid Lake, Rend Lake
Comments: The first two options appear better based on last year’s fishing reports.
