IHSA fishing approved

February 12, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Prep bass fishing will become a reality in the spring of 2009.

After months of discussion, the Illinois High School Association’s Board of Directors has approved a recommendation from Executive Director Marty Hickman to add a bass fishing tournament in the spring of 2009. The board’s only stipulation is that “adequate sponsorships are secured in advance for the tournament.” Illinois Outdoors

Finding sponsors for the event is expected to be fairly straightforward for the IHSA. That’s true in part because the IHSA will break ground on a national level—becoming the first state with a statewide bass tournament for high schoolers.

“The level of support for a bass fishing tournament, from both our membership and from other non-school groups, has demonstrated clearly to our Board that this event is one with potential tremendous value to our schools,” Hickman said in an IHSA press release. “Implementing such an activity will enable our schools to provide another opportunity for students that will enrich their educational experience and keep with the Association’s mission.”

Still to come is the structure of a tournament. We’ll have more on this story in the weeks and months to come.

I think this is awesome.  Getting more teens in the outdoors is great for the outdoors heritage.  Plus, it will give a kind that’s maybe not “too athletic” to have the opportunity to participate in a team sport.
