Ice anglers hope for more cold

January 24, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Warm wet weather is no friend to ice fishermen ... or to organizers of ice fishing tournaments in central Illinois who have their fingers crossed extra tight right now.

Here’s hoping a return to colder temperatures will ensure safe ice for these upcoming tournaments in the Peoria area.

Saturday: The 30th annual Lake Camelot ice fishing derby is 7 a.m. to noon at this subdivision southwest of Peoria off West Lancaster Road. Register at the clubhouse on Friday from 6-9 p.m. or Saturday starting at 6 a.m.

Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under with cash prizes awarded. In case of insufficient ice, the backup date is Feb. 6.

As for all tourneys, anglers must have a fishing license.

Feb. 6: Wildlife Prairie State Park has a tournament at the 10-acre lake across Taylor Road from the park entrance. The lake is rarely fished and is stocked with catfish. redear, crappie, bass and bluegill.

Fishing is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a 1:30 p.m. weigh-in. Cash prizes are awarded. Cost is $12, $5 for ages 15 and under through Friday, and then $16 up to Feb. 4. Visit getmeregistered.com or call (309) 676-0998.

Feb. 13: The Big 25 Fishing Club in Victoria opens its gates to the public for a tournament from 8 a.m. to noon. Check-in at 7:30 a.m. Cost is $20 per two-man team. E-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call (309) 696-3791.
