How many geese are in this picture?

It’s sort of like trying to guess how many jelly beans are in the big glass jar in order to win a prize.

Just how many geese are currently stopping over at The Nature Conservancy’s Emiquon Preserve and surrounding refuges managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?

It’s a hard figure to pin down.

This picture was taken Wednesday afternoon and only shows a fraction of the scene at Thompson Lake, adjacent to Illinois 78/97 in Fulton County.

“People have been calling our office looking for a number,” said Jason Beverlin of The Nature Conservancy. “I just say, ‘I really have no idea.’

Chris Hine, waterfowl scientist from the Illinois Natural History Survey’s Forbes Biological Station, conducted a ground count Wednesday afternoon.

According to the figures released Thursday morning, there were 101,500 snow geese at Emiquon.

Good one. Too bad we’re not offering a generous cash prize for the best guess.
