CHICAGO – Among the displays at the Schaumburg Boat & Sportshow today through Sunday is a Historical Fishing Display.

The Historical Fishing Display is an “antique road show” for fishing enthusiasts, featuring antique collector and fishing National Champion, Dan Basore, who will highlight one of the premier antique fishing gear collections in the world in an ‘Evolution of Fishing in America’ presentation. Visitors have the opportunity to view tackle, tools, lures and bait dating up to two thousand years old, as well as present their own antiques for appraised value.

“The Schaumburg Boat & Sportshow is the perfect venue for the Historical Fishing Display, as many of our attendees are fishing enthusiasts and avid antique collectors themselves,” said Keith Ogulnick, show manager. “This exhibit offers a special uniqueness to the show, allowing visitors to view rare and extraordinary fishing antiques and perhaps discover value in pieces from their own collection.”

The ‘Evolution of Fishing in America’ will begin by taking visitors through the “Old Copper Culture,” an era when native Americans found copper clusters brought to Wisconsin and Michigan by Glaciers over eleven thousand years ago.  Using stone hammers to extract copper from the dirt and mineral clusters, they made many tools including awls, fish hooks, gaffs, spear points and spuds.

Next are pre-historic items from Alaska, the Western Pacific and Philippines dating back as much as two thousand years, then displays of items brought over from Europe and those made in America throughout the 19th century.  Enthusiasts can then make their way through the era of major makers of tackle, beginning in the late 1800’s through the 1960’s, with displays from Pflueger, Shakespeare, Heddon, Creek Chub and South Bend bait companies.
