Illinois hunting and fishing

Edinburgh boat driver Douglas Henley (right) reacts when his brother Mathew Henley, 17, (left) loses a fish during Saturday’s IHSA sectional tournament at Sangchris Lake. Henley’s teammate is Jack Wagner.

UPDATED: High school anglers bring big bass to the scales

Call it confidence, if you like.

The Lutheran High School bass fishing team was first to the weigh-in last Friday at the conclusion of the Illinois High School Association bass fishing sectional tournament held at Lake Sangchris.

Rarely will a tournament bass angler call it quits early. No matter how many fish are in the live well, most will beat the water with cast after cast until the last possible moment.

But Lutheran was back at the East Boat Dock well before the deadline with 14.65 pounds of fish, including two weighing more than four pounds.

As it turned out, the catch was big enough to stay on top and claim the sectional title, even after all the other teams brought their fish to the scales.

Riverton was second with 12.77 pounds and Edinburg took third place with 12.69 pounds. (See the Top 10 finishers below.)

The top three teams advance to the state finals to be held May 4-5 at Carlyle Lake.

The weather started out cold and rainy, but the fish didn’t seem to mind.

“Bass fishermen know that with rainy weather, fish bite a little better,” says Mat Siebert of the winning Lutheran squad. “We are glad for that because this morning we pulled in the heaviest fish, 4.44 pounds.”

That fish won big bass honors for Siebert.

Other Lutheran team members were Jared Kerwin, Drake Hardin and Steven Davis.

“It was a great day and we had a great turnout,” says Athens coach and tournament director Kerry Trueblood.

“The fishery here at Sangchris has really turned around,” he says. “A lot of big fish caught here today, and we didn’t even need the 12-inch limit. I think most teams that weighed in fish had several fish over 15 inches.”

Weather was rainy to start the day, but nothing severe enough to delay the tournament.

“There wasn’t any lightning,” Trueblood says. “It was a little cold out there, but overall it was a great day for fishing.”

Nineteen sectional tournaments were held around the state featuring teams from 231 schools.
Each school is allowed two teams with up to four anglers per team.

Pairs of anglers trade off partway through the day, if there are more than two on a team.

This is the fourth year for competitive high school bass fishing in Illinois.

Mathew Henley, a senior with the third-place Edinburgh team, had two nice fish shake loose before he could get them in the boat Saturday.

“They were tough fish, and I tried to ‘hoss’ them a little too much,” he says. “I tried to get them in the net by myself and not just let the fish swim into the net.”

Cold hands made the job tougher.

“The second one should have been hooked a little bit better but my hand slipped off the reel,” Henley says. “It was pretty cold and wet, and I didn’t have real good hook sets on them.”

Even with two that got away, Edinburg is headed to the state finals.

Like any good fisherman, Henley wasn’t fully satisfied.

“I would really have like to have first place, though.”
