Handrails added to improve accessibility at Lake Shelbyville boat docks

Central Illinois Sportsmen for Outdoor Accessibility will be installing additional yellow handrails on a courtesy docks at Lake Shelbyville this spring.

Last year the docks at Bo Woods in Sullivan and Dam West in Shelbyville each had two sets of the yellow handrails installed to test their effectiveness and durability.

Sixteen new sets of yellow handrails will be installed all around the lake before the start of boating season, making 40 handrails in all.

The project is the result of cooperative efforts of local sportsmen, Eagle Creek and Wolf Creek State Parks, The U.S Army Corps of Engineers, and businesses such as Agri-Fab, Inc. in Sullivan.

In addition to the handrails, a switchback station was installed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources at the Eagle Creek State Park launching area. This allows those in wheel chairs to conveniently board or leave a boat.

About CISOA: Central Illinois Sportsmen for Outdoor is a community of sportsmen, agencies, and business people that have been working towards making the outdoor opportunities of central Illinois more available to its residents, including those that may not be as limber, nimble, or healthy as they once were.
