South Dakota officials ask hunters to avoid starting fires

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota wildlife officials are asking grouse hunters to take precautions to avoid starting grass fires.

The grouse and prairie chicken hunting season begins Saturday.

Assistant State Wildlife Director Emmett Keyser says the drought has created extremely high fire danger in the grasslands where grouse are found. He tells KGFX Radio (http://bit.ly/UTXDet ) that hunters should carry fire extinguishers, shovels and water in vehicles in case they need to fight a fire.

Keyser says vehicles should not be parked over dry grass or driven off designated roads or trails.

He says the Department of Game, Fish and Parks will have an airplane flying over the Fort Pierre National Grasslands on Saturday to spot and prevent fires in the popular grouse-hunting area. State and federal wildlife crews also will monitor the area.

Fire douses sage grouse hunt in 1 Nevada area

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Wildlife Commission has canceled the sage grouse hunting season in one northern Nevada area because of wildfires.

Commissioners voted Friday to scrub the 10-day season in hunt unit 031 in northern Humboldt County. The area is northwest of Winnemucca extends to the Oregon line, where the Holloway fire this summer burned more than 450,000 acres.

Officials say a lot of sage grouse habitat was burned.

The season was to have run from Sept. 25 through Oct. 4.
