Granberg: three weeks to a full pension

April 27, 2009 at 09:07 PM

Though he served only 21 days as director of the Department of Natural Resources, Kurt Granberg is still going to pick up a $40,000 boost to his pension.

The Illinois Pension Review Board voted 3-2 to pay a pension increase. The vote was along party lines.

As a result, Granberg gets a $111,716 annual pension—about a $40,000 increase over a simple legislative pension.

“The Democrats have rewarded Governor Blagojevich’s scandal appointee with an additional $40,000 a year for the rest of his life,” State Senator John O. Jones (R-Mt. Vernon) told the Mount Vernon Register-News. “Mr. Granberg spent a little more than 20 days as head of the Department of Natural Resources and will receive more money than many of the families in the 54th District make.”

THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE WORST DECISIONS I CAN REMEMBER.
WE NEED A LAWYER WILLING TO DONATE HIS TIME TO FILE A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE PENSION BOARD AND LET THIS ONE BE DECIDED IN THE COURTS. I KNOW THERE HAS TO BE A SPORTSMAN/LAWYER OUT THERE WHO IS WILLING TO DO THAT.
DON’T MISS THE PART - THE VOTE WAS ALONG PARTY LINES. MORE BS ILLINOIS POLITICS.
I WOULD BE MORE THAN WILLING TO FILE THE LAWSUIT IF I HAD THE DOLLARS TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH IT.
WE NEED THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE ON THE PENSION BOARD MADE PUBLIC AS THEY ARE THE ONES - AT LEAST THE THREE - DO DOUBT DEMOCRATS - WHO VOTED IN FAVOR OF THE “BLAGO GOLDEN PARACHUTE”.
THIS GUY WAS NEVER OFFICIALLY THE DIRECTOR. IN FACT HIS NAME WAS NEVER EVEN PLACED IN NOMINATION FOR THE POSITION. HE WAS NEVER CONFIRMED AS DIRECTOR BY THE SENATE AS THEY WERE NEVER GIVEN THE NOMINATION BY BLAGO.
NOW SOME LAWMAKER OUT THERE INTERESTED IN DOING SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE STATE INSTEAD OF TRYING TO MANAGE OUR NATURAL RESOURCES CAN SCORE SOME POINTS DOING THE RIGHT THING. A LAW WHICH WOULD STOP THIS TYPE OF ABUSE.

I WONDER IF GRANBURG EVER EXPLAINED WHAT HE DID WITH THE $50,000 HE WITHDREW FROM HIS CAMPAIGN FINANCE FUNDS ON OCT. 6, 2008. I’VE NEVER HEARD A FULL EXPLANATION FROM HIM. THE WITHDRAWL WAS DISCLOSED ON HIS 2008 CAMPAIGN FINANCE DISCLOSURE STATEMENT FILED JANUARY 20,2009. I BELIEVE THAT WAS 4 DAYS AFTER HIS APPOINTMENT BY BLAGO. HYPOTHETICALLY, IF HE WERE TO BE INDICTED IN A PAY TO PLAY SCHEME WITH BLAGO WOULD HE STILL BE ENTITLED TO THE PENSION?
IF MORE INDICTMENTS COME FROM THE BLAGO INVESTIGATION COULD GRANBURG BE ONE OF THEM?
ONLY THE FBI AND PATRICK FITZGERALD HAVE THAT ANSWER.

BradB- An indictment would not stop him from receiving his pension, however a conviction on a felony would. The caveat in that response is that felony convictions are supposed to bar state employee from receiving their pensions, however there have been court decisions where individuals have challenged that rule successfully.

IF anyone knows that name of the crocked politicians that voted this through, for their fellow Democrat, PLEASE post their names here for all to see !!!
Lets expose them for what they really are.

I seem to recall Granburg saying his appointment wasn’t about the money.  Maybe he should do the right thing and decline the pension.  Probably not.  If he doesn’t then he is just another crooked lying (it is about the money) politician in my book.

Where’s Fitzgerald when you need him…..

Posted by Henry Holt on 04/28 at 08:43 AM

Man that really takes the cake. You just wonder how those people can sleep at night, Oh yeah they are IL. politicians. I know there are some good ones but too damm few. Just remember Ole Pat Quinn is going to rise our taxes he needs more money now I see why. But this stuff happens over and over again and we should be used to it. But it really makes you sick. Time for a tea party!

How can this state ever rebound when these politicians are rewarded for wrongdoing.  Wonder what they would start doing if Grandburg was found guilty and lost his pension.  It all starts somewhere and with him a example could be made!!!

Quote from Granburg,

Granberg, whom Blagojevich appointed a week after the House impeached him, said he didn?t take the job for the benefit bump, but to promote state parks and natural areas and use them to fire up a lagging economy, particularly in southern Illinois.

?I?m not in it about the money,? Granberg said. ?I enjoy the public service and I enjoy the challenges.?

Ya right.

THE TEA PARTY CONCEPT IS GREAT BUT MUCH BETTER WOULD INVOLVE HEAVY CHAIN AND CONCRETE BLOCKS WITH APPROPRIATE ATTACHMENTS SENT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CHICAGO HARBOR.

With so many retirees in this country having their pensions slashed and benefits cut it really disgusts me that Granberg gets a big boost for his retirement nest egg. This Blago lackey doesn’t deserve one penny of that pension money.

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 04/28 at 10:10 AM

Now we know why IDNR needs those license fee increases.  It’s to pay their share of the Granberg retirement sham.  Yes, sad but true, his $40,000 per year increase in pension will come from the DNR budget, since he last worked for that agency.  Now that’s one good deal….pay $50,000 to your old friend Blago and receive a $40,000/year pay-back for the rest of your life.  Hey Fitzgerrel, Obama got your hand’s tied?  Why don’t you investigate some good old home grown pay to play?  Or maybe your afraid of what you would find if you dug very deep in Illinois politics as usual.

Chicago Tribune article of March 29, 2009:
“House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) today presented the legislation as the first product of their joint comittee on reforms in the wake of the Blagojevich corruption arrest. They said that getting rid of all current board members allows the state pension funds to start with a clean slate.

This morning, the House Executive Committee sent the measure to the full House on an 11-0 vote, signaling the legislation backed by the state’s two most powerful lawmakers will have few obstacles in landing on new Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk. A Quinn spokesman said the governor has made pension reforms a top priority but could not comment specifically on the Madigan-Cullerton proposal.

Under the legislation, Quinn would have 30 days to appoint new pension board members. He also would be able to keep current members on a board if he wishes.”

So, the question is did Quinn appoint a new board or are we still playing with the board members that “bought” their seats from Rod Blagojevich?  We’re going to find out who they are and post them on here for all to see.  We’ll just see how well they will take the heat for this. If they bought their appointment here, maybe there are some other things in their pasts they don’t want anyone to look at either.  Aren’t these blogs fun!

We could all use a lot more press on the political issues and individuals who are responsible for the problem we have in society. Peer pressure is one of the greatest tools ever. Once the board members that voted on this are exposed they should be pressured to give through explanations of why they voted for and not against. Use whatever legal resources possible. for instance turn their life upside down. Animal rights groups should protest in front of their houses. Why this money could go to help endangered species in Illinois. That is enough money to send multiple kids to college for science degrees. The use for this money is never ending.

the funny thing is you guys are suprised about this. all simply boils down to government being government. they suck.  mr granberg needs to walk in front of moving traffic and save us taxpayers a million bucks.

Claybourne doesn’t surprise me, look where he’s from, the most corrupt county in the state besides Cook Co. ( I know I lived here all my life.)He will be in his position as long as he’s still able to buy the votes from East St.Louis. Dan Reitz does surprise me, I thought he was for the sportsmen in this state but evidently he’s just another political hack that follows his party line instead of representing the best interest of the people he is suppose to be serving.
I would love to vote him out of office but he has run unopposed the last to elections.

i dont have much to add to this except if you want a change in illinois just make sure that we dont vote for the democrats any more. or we can just keep them in power and keep all of our money going to the great “state” of chicago, because thats the only thing on illinois that matters.

I have a few choice words for Granberg and his cronies.  Dirtbag, loser politicians.  What else would we expect out of such a corrupt state.  That $40,000 would go along ways in running some check stations but Granberg will be spending it on his life of luxury.  Mr Granberg, do use a favor.  “Go visit Mexico City”.

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 04/29 at 07:45 AM

Andy, how about paid trips to Mexico City?  Miller is a puppet, No change in what the DNR is doing. It a complet smoke and mirrors game.  I am not with all the others that think Miller is our saving grace and that he has alot on his plate. Looks like he has spoken on our deer herd with season dates after Xmas for LWS and then again in January.  I would say the decesion wasn’t in his hands but in the special interest groups that run this crooked state.  Quinn better prepare to empty his desk out, he lost my vote.

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on 04/29 at 08:29 AM

Well boys and girls the two things we can do. 1 vote the S.O.B.s out of office. 2 If just a 1/4 of us would stick togeter and not buy a hunting and fishing license, a deer tag. habitate stamp and every other damm thing we have to buy to enjoy the outdoors. If that would happen you would see how fast things would change, It’s all about the money and if it stop coming then you could bet the farm things would get a whole lot better.

IF YOU WANT TO LET THEM KNOW HERE IS SOME INFORMATION - NOT ALL FROM ME.

WE HAVE A TENDENCY TO COMPLAIN ABOUT MANY ISSUES WE HAVE LITTLE OR NO CONTROL OVER. WE WANT TO DONATE MONEY TO HAVE SOMEONE LEAVE AN AGENCY OR HAVE THE ADMINISTRATION FIRE SOMEONE THAT HAS SCREWED SOMETHING UP WE HOLD NEAR AND DEAR.

THIS ISSUE MAY BE DIFFERENT, OBVIOUSLY IT WAS DONE WITH SELF INTEREST, ARROGANCE AND NO REGARD FOR THE RESOURCE. THERE IS A WAY WE CAN IMPACT WHAT WAS DONE, IT IS CALLED AN ELECTION. EACH ONE OF THESE YAHOOS HAVE TO FACE THEIR CONSTITUENCY WITH THIS ON THEIR RESUMES. WE COMPLAIN TO EACH OTHER WITH LITTLE IMPACT ON THE OUTCOME, LET’S INFORM THE PEOPLE WHO ELECT THEM WHAT THEY HAVE DONE AND ASK FOR A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION. HERE’S HOW; WRITE AND CALL;

SENATOR JAMES CLAYBORNE-(D-16 BELLVILLE) WRITE ANY COLLINSVILLE NEWSPAPER, THE ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH OR ANYOTHER LOCAL PAPER, E-MAIL .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) 217-782-5399(O) 618-274-3010 (District)

THE MESSAGE SHOULD BE POLITE AND SIMPLE;

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS ARE TIRED OF CORRUPTION AND SELF SERVING POLITICIANS AND ARE ASKING FOR A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE CRONYISM THAT ALLOWED FORMER REPRESENTATIVE GRANBERG TO RECEIVE A $40,000 ANNUAL INCREASE TO HIS PENSION FOR 3 WEEKS OF EMPLOYMENT AT IDNR DURING WHICH PERIOD HE WAS NOT CONFIRMED AS DIRECTOR.

NOTE: KURT GRANBERG AUTHORED A BILL, WHICH BECAME LAW, IN 1994 OR 5 WHICH WOULD NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. IRONICALLY THE LAW DOES NOT APPLY TO ANYONE WHO WAS IN OFFICE PRIOR TO 1994. IT APPEARS HE HAS BEEN PLANNING THIS FOR A LONG TIME.
