Gas prices hurting Great Lakes charters

June 30, 2008 at 01:19 PM

MANISTEE, Mich. (AP) — High gas prices being faced by drivers across the country also are being felt in the Great Lakes sportfishing industry, where some say tournament entries are down and charter boat excursions are being scrapped.

The increase in fuel prices to above the $4 a gallon mark has resulted in fewer boats on the lakes, fewer lines in the water and a decrease in the number of fish being reeled in, the News Advocate reported.

“I’ve had the most cancellations ever this year,” said Gary Schaefer, charter boat captain of Trout Scout III in Manistee. “People just can’t afford the price of gas just to get up here.”

In addition, he said, the price at a marina to fill up his 36-foot boat is nearly $2,000.

“One out of every four trips goes just to pay for gas,” he said. “It’s ridiculous.”

Fred MacDonald owns Tournament Trail, a 15-event series of tournaments on Lake Michigan, and said he has seen the numbers dwindle at every stop.

“This is my sixth tournament, and they’ve been down about 15 percent,” he said during the recent Budweiser Pro-Am in Manistee. “It’s absolutely a direct result of the fuel prices.”

Andy McQuillan, captain of Hawg Tide II in Frankfort, said it is a strain to fish at tournaments. His boat took first place in the recent Ladies Classic tournament in Manistee for a $1,500 prize.

“Tournaments are a tough decision,” he said. “What I did today, I barely broke even.”

As we all know, there is nothing we can do to control the prices at the pump. Cutting back on driving and making only necessary trips is the way to conserve. I also stumbled across a website that talks about fixed price gasoline. GasBankUSA, http://www.gasbankusa.com has a plan to lock in a price for gas even if the price goes up.
