Firearm deer seasons getting underway in the Midwest

Illinois seven-day firearm season opens Friday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois firearm deer season begins Friday through Sunday and concludes Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.

Hunters harvested more than 98,000 deer during last year’s seven-day hunt. So far this year, about 334,000 permits have been issued.

The legal hunting hours for the firearm season are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Marc is reminding hunters to be safe while enjoying the hunt.

In most counties, hunters who succeed in taking a deer during the firearm season must register online through the IDNR website or by phoning 1-866-IL-CHECK (1-866-452-4325).

Indiana gun hunters start Saturday

Indiana firearm season kicks off Saturday and runs through Dec. 2.

Muzzleloader season dates are Dec. 8 - 23, and the special antlerless season is Dec. 26 - Jan. 6.

Archery season closes in Indiana Jan. 6.

Iowa shotgun season starts in December

Iowa gets a later start than some other states, waiting until early december for its first shotgun season.

Iowa firearm hunting dates are: Dec. 1 - 5 and 8 - 16.

The late-winter antlerless season is Jan. 11 - 20.

A special “holiday” season for non-residents will be held Dec. 24 - Jan. 2.

Michigan firearm deer season gets underway, but with limits

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s 16-day firearm deer season is getting under way, although with limits for hunters across much of the southern part of the Lower Peninsula.

Hunters in that part of the state won’t be allowed to kill as many deer as usual because of an insect-spread deer disease.

Firearm deer hunting season is starting Thursday and runs through Nov. 30.

The new limits on antlerless deer hunting are a response to epizootic hemorrhagic disease. The state Department of Natural Resources has collected reports indicating thousands of deer have died from the disease in Michigan this year.

Wildlife officials decided that stricter limits on antlerless deer licenses would help populations bounce back faster in hard-hit areas.

The disease isn’t a threat to humans.

Missouri firearm season already underway

Firearm deer season in Missouri opened Nov. 10 and runs through Nov. 20.

Here are some other firearm season dates:

Antlerless: Nov. 21-Dec. 2 only in selected areas

Alternative Methods: Dec. 15-25 statewide

Late youth: Dec. 29-30, statewide

Gun permits down, archery permits up in Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gun license sales are down and archery licenses are up ahead of this weekend’s start of Wisconsin’s gun deer-hunting season, a Department of Resources spokesman said Wednesday.

But DNR spokesman Ed Culhane said it’s too soon to say whether fewer gun hunters will be out since the Friday before the season is usually the busiest single day for sales. But hunting overall is down, he said.

“That is a trend that has been going on for decades and continues,” he said.

According to the DNR, there were nearly 376,000 licenses sold as of Tuesday, compared to nearly 403,000 last year at the same time. In the end, there were nearly 604,000 licenses sold as of opening day in 2011. Archery licenses were at nearly 216,000 as of Sunday, up nearly 8,700 over the same time last year.

“We’ve recently been seeing an explosion in interest in archery by young people, which can be attributed to the Hunger Game books and movie, where the heroin is an archer,” Culhane said.

The gun season starts runs through Nov. 25. The second half of the bow season also starts Saturday and runs through Jan. 6. The muzzleloader season starts Nov. 26.
