Earth Day celebration planned for Emiquon on April 22

Prairie State Outdoors

Lewistown, IL –  An Earth Day celebration bill be held from 1 - 4 p.m. April 22 at The Nature Conservancy’s Lakeside and Wetland Observatory at the Emiquon Preserve Visitor Use Area.

The Visitor Use Area is located off Illinois 78/97 just north of Dickson Mounds Road.

The event is held in cooperation with members of the Emiquon Partnership, including Dickson Mounds Museum, The Nature Conservancy, The University of Illinois Springfield Therkildsen Field Station and the U.S. Fish and WIldlife Service.

Activities include:

A voyageur canoe trip to an open-water ecology laboratory on Thompson Lake

Kite flying throughout the afternoon

An Environscape demonstration from 2:30 – 2:45 p.m.

Lakeside Observatory walk and talk presentations from 1:10 - 1:30 p.m. and 3 - 3:20 p.m.

The Wetland Observatory walk and talk presentations will be held from 2 - 2:20 p.m. and 3:30-3:50 p.m.. 

Wetland Wildlife, a hands-on program, will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Wetland Observatory. 

This event is open to the public and admission is free. 

Activities will be for all ages.

Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the outdoors. 

Restrooms are located at Dickson Mounds Museum. 

Parking is available at The Nature Conservancy’s Emiquon Preserve Visitor Use Area.

In the event of rain, indoor activities will be held at Dickson Mounds Museum.
