DNR open houses scheduled; comments sought on waterfowl zones and season dates

May 24, 2011 at 11:38 AM

Prairie State Outdoors

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will host five public open houses statewide to allow waterfowl hunters to comment on proposals for the upcoming duck and goose hunting seasons.

DNR staff will present information on proposed duck zones and season date options for the next five years.

Background information, including aerial waterfowl surveys, weather and freeze-up data, and hunter survey results also will be available.

Proposed waterfowl season dates and zone lines are subject to approval by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a proposal from Illinois and other states that would allow states two new options in establishing duck zones, including the establishment of a fourth zone, or the option to split three zones into two season segments each.

DNR supports establishment of a fourth zone due to the differences in the timing of migration from north to south – a distance in Illinois covering more than 430 miles.

Waterfowl public meetings schedule:

Monday, June 6 – PASA Park, Barry (located off I-72, exit 20, west of Pittsfield in Pike Co.)
