Deer season good for business

November 19, 2011 at 08:51 PM

McDonough County Voice

Farm King had a steady stream of customers on Friday, opening day of Illinois’ first firearm deer season of 2011, which runs through Sunday. As of Nov. 15, 327,000 permits were issued state-wide, and local activity appeared to be brisk on Friday.

“We’ve been extremely busy,” said Robert Huber, Farm King store manager, while assisting hunters fill out license applications. “We sold 156 hunting permits on Thursday and 78 today.”

Huber said he’s heard mostly positive reactions from hunters who have stopped by the store.

“So far, so good. It’s not as cold as they would like, because the cold weather tends to bring out the deer. Most have said they have seen some really large deer. We’ve seen some good pictures of deer that people shot this morning.”

Under IDNR rules, hunters are legally allowed to shoot from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Kelly Kinate, 51, of Fairbury, about three hours east of Macomb, has been hunting for 20 years and usually visits the Macomb area during the firearm deer season. Friday afternoon he made a stop at Farm King for hunting gear.

“It’s the layout of the land,” he said about why the hunting seems to be better around Macomb. “Where I live everything is flat.”

Kinate went out hunting early Friday morning with a few friends, but didn’t shoot anything. He also declined to give away his secret hunting spot.

“We never share,” he laughed. “I saw two small deer, but that’s about it.”

He usually tries to bag at least two deer per season, a buck and doe, and has them processed for eating.

Kinate said he planned to stay the weekend and do more hunting.

Firearm deer season also helps bring in business for Farm King. By mid-afternoon Friday, the store had sold 12 firearms and hunting gear like gloves were disappearing fast off store shelves.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois hunters shot 98,944 deer during the 2010 seven-day firearm season.

The second firearm deer season runs Dec. 1-4.
