Deer killed, to be donated after crashing into Rockford store

Rockford Register-Star

ROCKFORD - A deer crashed through the window of a downtown business this morning and spent more than an hour alone inside the store before authorities decided to put it down.

The young buck smashed its way into CD Source, 228 E. State St., before 8 a.m. Authorities weren’t sure what startled the buck or why it ran into the store.

It stood calm inside the store for more than an hour while Rockford police, firefighters and Winnebago County Animal Services waited for an employee to bring keys to open the store.

Authorities don’t have a tranquilizer strong enough to subdue the deer and the animal had sustained an injury.

Officials determined there was no way to safely remove it and return it to the wild without the possibility of injuring humans. The deer was shot twice with an AR-15 rifle. No people were hurt in the incident.

Larry Sheets, owner of Benny’s Cleaners at 126 N. First St., had the deer’s body processed into meat to donate to a local food bank.

CD Source is open today. A plywood board is covering the broken window.
